What Causes Frequent Falls In Elderly?

My friend who is 70 says she keeps falling down. She says she s just clumsy, but I know she s not. What kinds of tests should she have? I don t want to scare her, but I know falling down can be a symptom of ALS. So I want to scare her just enough so that she ll ask her doctor to refer her for the proper tests.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Frequent falls in an elderly of 70 years is a matter of concern. It could be due to 'transient ischaemic attacks' (TIA) or due to iron deficiency anaemia. These conditions needs an evaluation.
For TIA, you need check her blood pressure, get her bleeding time and clotting time checked, echocardiogram and CT scan of brain done.
For iron deficiency anaemia, get her hemoglobin checked.
Kindly consult Physician with reports for appropriate management.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
