What Causes Frequent Heart Palpitations?

Good Day Doctor^^ I just want to ask what could be the reason why I often palpitate if i am trying to take a nap in the afternoon. My heart rate and pulse rate beat so fast that i feel my flesh is trembling as well. What should i do? I am taking Althea pills and metformin as treatments for my PCOS. I hope you could give me feedback. Thanks a lot. :)

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to know more about you like - a. What is your age? b. Do you have symptoms like fatigue on exertion, breathlessness on exertion, swelling of feet, etc? c. Do you have symptoms like weight loss, excessive sweating, excessive appetite, etc? d. Apart from after meals, any other times do you have palpitation? e. Is stress a significant factor in your life?

Above details would help me to know more about your health and problems and therefore to make more specific suggestions for you.

At present, from your provided details, I would suggest you as follows:

1. If not investigated so far, I would suggest you investigations like complete blood counts, serum cholesterol profile, chest X ray and Electrocardiogram (ECG). I would also suggest thyroid testing if you have symptoms such as weight loss, excessive appetite, excessive sweating, etc. Also, please get your blood pressured measured by your doctor, if not done recently.

2. There are many possible causes for palpitation. It is important to first rule out cardiac causes. Above investigations will be reasonably helpful to identify any heart-related cause, if it is there.

3. If there is no heart-related cause, I would think of common and simple causes like anemia (low hemoglobin) and would suggest you multimineral-multivitamin supplementation for a few weeks, including folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D, etc.

4. If stress is an important factor in your life, I would suggest you relaxation and meditation regularly.

5. If you feel palpitation only after noon meal, I would suggest you to take a lighter meal in noon and improve your digestion.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
