What Causes Frequent Pain And Spasms In The Neck?

Since I visited the dentist a week ago, I ve been getting frequent neck muscle spasms with severe pain primarily at the base of my skull just to the right of my spine. Yesterday I saw my doctor who recommended OTC pain patches. Am getting some relief but the pain is aggravated by chewing but not in my TMJ areas, only at the base of my skull. Pain is also relieved for a short time with hot compresses. Seek further medical attention?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain in base of neck seems to be due to muscle strain during your dental treatment(when you have to sit with extended neck resting on back of chair.) .

Provided you have no cervical spondylosis. Continue with the care you are taking at present. You can add muscle relaxant ointment (Relaxil) locally. If there is no relief within 8-10 days. Consult an orthopedic.

Hope I have answered your query.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
