What Causes Frequent Skipped Heartbeats?

Hi! I am a 44 year old female, over weight by at least 35 pounds. Every so often, my heart begins to have skipped beats. Then it suddenly resolves, after 3 - 4 days. I have always assumed this was hormonal, and it has often coincided with my monthly cycle. Recently, the pounding began again about 3 days ago. I was out walking today (2 miles), and almost immediately the skipped beats began. After about 1.5 miles, I was beginning to have to stop because they were painful and occurring about once a minute. I am still getting them about once every 30 minutes, but not painful like they were on my walk. I went to a free health fair in March, and my cholesterol and sugar results were well within the normal range.

Hi,

There an be various causes of skipped heart betas. It can be related to heart conditions (heart valve or muscle or rhythm disorders), electrolyte imbalance (abnormal salts in body) or sometimes due to abnormal hormones like thyroid. Besides it can due to low hemoglobin or low blood pressure. Sometimes lack of proper sleep, stress, anxiety, excessive exercise, drinking excessive tea, coffee or alcohol can also cause palpitations. There are a couple of medicines also which cause palpitations like asthma related medicines.

I feel that we need to go for detailed evaluation. First of all, focus on lifestyle changes. Reduce your stress level, go for walk or meditation, have a good night sleep and eat a balanced diet with less of tea or coffee. Good you cholesterol and sugar are fine but if the symptoms persist we need to go for further investigations like complete blood count, sodium potassium, TSH, ECG and holter monitoring (24 ECG monitoring).

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
