What Causes Frequent Spasms In The Legs?

I am bothered with sciatia and have been experiencing frequent muscle spasms in my legs. I take many medicines for congestive heart failure; among them is lasix, a statin drug, potassium, cumadin, metropolol, etc. Is there anything I can do to alleviate these painful cramps?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The muscle spasm you are experiencing could possibly be side effect of Lasix or statin you are taking. Lasix can cause electrolytes depletion (like magnesium, calcium, etc.) in the body. Such electrolytes imbalance can cause muscle spasm.

Other possibility is that statin can cause muscle damage and cause similar symptoms. Please be advised to follow-up with your treating physician to get the blood electrolyte level and creatinine kinase level.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
