What Causes Frequent Throat Spasms?

I have been having throat spasms for a few years, and lately they ve been more frequent, usually when I eat or drink, but sometimes when I m not doing either. I have been on zoloft for about 2 months, and the problem still is happening, so I really don t think it s stress, because I m not stressed out or depressed about anything. I just had a spasm a few minutes ago and it still is hurting in the base of my throat and a little in my chest. In the past, I ve had an endoscopy with no results showing up. Should I request another one?

Welcome to healthcaremagic. What you are describing is esophageal dysmotility/spasms which could be diffuse. The Zoloft will not help. I suspect that this is worse with cold liquids. You will need a motility test not just an endoscopy and while the motility test is performed you will hope that that the spasms occur so that pressures along your esophagus can be documented. The medications that help with this are called calcium channel blockers. Good luck hope this helps.
