Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
If I had more than regular urinations for four consecutive days using lasix and had my blood tested just three days after that. Could I be getting a false read on my potasium? My Dr. Wants me to take kayexalate. I need to know if it is safe? Thank you & take care!
Taking Lasix do cause a low level of potassium. It truly decreases the potassium level. The value of potassium is not affected by this drug, I mean the tests result is a true one. If the value is high, this may be false because of other reasons like a hemolyzed blood sample, (but can truly be high) so if there is no reason for high potassium, we recommend to repeat the test.
Kayexalate is effective for high potassium and mostly safe. We give drugs to move the bowel after taking it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
General & Family Physician
