Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have cirrhosis diagnosed 5 yrs ago. I have had ultrasounds and 2 endoscopies and 2 ct scans. I was told i have varices in my stomach. I had an endoscopy done 3 weeks ago and have varices in my esophagus. Have read a lot about cirrhosis but not as much about varices of esophagus. Would like more info about the varices.
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Cirrhosis of liver is invariably associated with portal hypertension. This will cause increased pressure in the veins supplying gastrointestinal tract. It will lead to dilatation of veins present on the mucous membranes in the gastrointestinal tract. 'Varices' is plural terminology, which is an abnormally dilated vessel with a tortuous course. Esophageal and gastric varices are commonly noted with cirrhosis of liver, which can be diagnosed by means of endoscopic visualisation. Hope the information provided would be helpful. Best wishes. Regards, Dr.Ashakiran.S., MBBS., MD.
