What Causes Glandular Fever?

Hello, my son developed very sore infected tonsils over 48 hours, with fever & headache (?). I took him to the GP who put him on phenoxymethylpencillin (4 per day) & also gave him an injection. Within a day or two he developed a slight rash. By day 3 (yesterday) his rash was quite pronounced so I took him back to doctor thinking it was an allergic reaction to penicillin (prior to this I thought it may have been a heat rash). The doctor changed his tablets & suggested it might be glandular fever as he has apparently had that medication before. He therefore had a blood test but the results are not due til next week. How likely do you think it is to be glandular fever & if so, is it transmittable via swimming pool? (our own salt water pool). His rash is a bit itchy & he talks of tingling in his fingers. It has settled down due to use of anti-histamine & cortison cream (celestone). Thank you for your help :-)
