What Causes Global Delays And Balance Problems In A Child?

Hi! I have a 2 year old patient who will turn 3 in Sept. and has no speech, reports of global delays, and balance/coordination issues. Tympanograms indicate no middle ear fluid and compliant eardrums. Hearing is normal in both ears. He does not have any significant otitis media Hx or apnea. What might be causing the global delays and balance problems?

Hi,

Developmental delay and balance problem points towards a neurological problem. Speech delay also is a part of it. To find out the cause, we need few more details (like any events during pregnancy, problems during / after delivery, delayed cry on birth, neonatal infections) and some tests like brain scanning. It would be fine if you take him to a pediatric neurologist for evaluation, if not already done.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
