Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
About ten years ago I took Lamisil successfully with no problems at all. Now I have been taking it again, but this time taking the generic called Terbinafine (250mg). My hair is falling out by the handfuls and the hair that is there has a change in texture, too. I was thinking post menaposal/hormones. 1. I m going to stop taking it. 2. Will my hair grow back? Thanks
Anti-fungal medications like Terbinafine can cause hair loss throughout the body. It can interfere the normal growth and texture of the hair. It can deplete your body's supply of certain B complex vitamins like biotin and niacin or cause a severe iron deficiency. B complex deficiency or iron deficiency causes hair loss. So, the best way to counteract these side effects is to start taking vitamin B or iron supplements under the advisement of your doctor.
Most of the time, drugs like Terbinafine induced hair loss is reversible. A person's hair usually starts growing back a few months after they stop taking the medication. If stopping the drug doesn't improve hair thinning, you may need to be treated with finasteride or minoxidil, medications that slow hair loss and can stimulate new hair growth.
Take care. Hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.
