What Causes Hair To Become Brittle?

I am a 19 year old college student. A year ago, I noticed that my hair was extremely brittle in places. After a year, the damage was still there despite multiple hair cuts. A few months ago, I had all the damaged hair cut out. Today the damage is back and worse than ever. What is this a symptom of? Every hair dresser I have ever gone to says they have never seen this. I do not take drugs or prescription meds.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Nutritional deficiency such as anemia, hormonal imbalance like polycystic ovaries, hypothyroidism, stress, excessive weight loss can all cause hair loss or brittle hair.

Dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and many infections can also cause hair loss. Localised loss of hair can occur in skin conditions such as alopecia areata which should also be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
