What Causes Hallucinations At Nights Along With Dizziness?

While in a deep sleep I am awakened by a very loud knock, two knocks, and they are so loud that I believe it is someone knocking on my front door (I live in an apartment). I am instantly awake (not the normal way I wake up, by the way) and I get out of bed--sometimes I m a little dizzy, sometimes not--grab my robe and rush to the door. There is never anyone at the door. This doesn t happen often--it s twice in the last three months, once two months before that, but four times last year and one time the year before that, which was the first time. Why does this keep happening? Should I be worried? Thanks

Hello,

Hallucinations are sensory experiences that appear real but are created by your mind. They can affect all five of your senses. There are several causes.

Mental health conditions
Substance use
Substance use is another fairly common cause of hallucinations. Some people see or hear things that aren’t there after drinking too much alcohol or taking drugs like cocaine.
Hallucinogenic drugs like LSD and PCP can also cause you to hallucinate.
Lack of sleep
Other conditions
Other conditions can also cause hallucinations. These can include:
•     high fevers, especially in children and the elderly
•     migraine
•     social isolation, particularly in older adults
•     seizures
•     deafness, blindness, or vision problems
•     epilepsy (in some cases, epileptic seizures can cause you to see flashing shapes or bright spots)
•     terminal illnesses, such as stage 3 HIV (AIDS), brain cancer, or kidney and liver failure.

I do not know the reasons for you not feeling well, so please contact your family doctor to do some lab tests and a check-up.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Enton Dore, General & Family Physician
