What Causes Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease In A Child?
My 1 yr old grandson was just diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth virus. My daughter was told to give him Tylenol and oral benadryl. My question is whether calamine lotion or caladryl can be applied in the scrotal area because he has a couple areas from virus on his scrotum besides his mouth. She tried nystatin and it seemed to make it worse. If it can be applied, would something like Butt Paste work better than calamine lotion or vice versa?
Nystatin is an antifungal, used to treat fungal infection, not the virus. This explains why it made the rash worse.
Usually, we apply gentian violet solution (red colored solution) on the skin rash. Calamine is applied only on undamaged skin. The rash will disappear on its own after a few days (up to 3 weeks) with no scar left.
So, better discuss with his caring doctor to provide this solution to you.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
