What Causes Hard Painful Patch Of Flaky Skin Post Exposure To Sun?

I had 8+ hours of unprotected sun exposure. It was followed by a very painful sunburn. It took a few day to stop hurting and start peeling. While most areas are peeling as expected, there are two very large areas on my back that are rough and oddly firm and still quite painful. They are slightly flakey but aren t peeling. Is it anything I should be worried about?

Hi,

That painful flaky patch of ski may be due to any of the following:
1) Sun burn
2) Allergic contact dermatitis
3) Psoriasis
4) Lichen planus
5) Seborrhic dermatitis

That plaque needs to be clinically examined before coming to a specific diagnosis. So my suggestion is to consult a dermatologist for a detailed in person examination and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
