What Causes Headache And Dizziness After Suffering A Head Injury?

Hi, I slipped on the ice last nightHi, I slipped on the ice last night and hit the back of my head. I did not lose consciousness and was able to stand up immediately afterwards. However, I have felt lightheaded since with on and off dizziness and nausea. I had a mild headache after the fall, but now feel a slightly worse headache (not the worst I've ever had) with a pressure feeling in the back of my head. My pupils are reactive to light. Do these symptoms sound like something serious is going on, or are they typical following a hit to the head?

Hello. Thanks for asking from hCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you are conscious and oriented after head injury. Now to confirm your head injury whether it is dangerous head injury or mild, we should rule out few signs

: vomiting
: loss of consciousness for more than 5 minutes
: progressively increasing headache which is not responding to painkillers. As you are having worse headache, you should take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription. If you get relief, dangerous head injury is less likely.
: bleed through ear, nose or throat
: fits
: onset of new focal deficit

If you have any of above sign, you should consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor will advise CT head to rule out fracture or bleed. Fracture is usually managed conservatively while bleed may need surgical evacuation.

Dizziness and nausea may occur after head injury. They usually resolve on its own in few days. If you do not have any of above signs, you should not worry. Your injury seems mild. For relief, you can follow few tips

: Avoid pressure at injury site
: Apply icepacks at injury site
: You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription
: For dizziness, you can take beta-histine or Cinnerizine after proper prescription.
: For nausea, you can take Domperidone after proper prescription.

If still no relief, you can consult doctor. Hope it will help you.

Thanks. Take care.
