Hi,I am Raju.A.T (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Headache At Back Of Head And Fever In Child?
My four year old has woken up the past two nights complaining of a headache in the back of his head. He has had a fever (peak of 101) which has been manageable with Advil, but it keeps coming back. He has an appetite, is drinking water, and plays quietly. My other son (20 months old) had a virus last week that caused a fever (also 101), but lasted only 48 hours. My older son is able to show me where his headaches are (on the back of his head), and this has me concerned it is something more serious. Please advise. Thank you.
A headache in children may be a normal symptom along with fever. Usually it is not of concern and goes away itself with the resolution of fever. However, in following situations, you are immediately advised to consult your doctor for further management.
1- If the headache and fever is accompanied by stiffness of neck 2- If the pain is severe and unrelenting even after use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen 3- If it is accompanied by persistent or frequent vomiting 4- When the child is generally sleepy and is feeling difficulty in talking, walking or doing normal activities 5- When this headache wakes the child from sleep 6- When the headache is worse when lying down
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
