What Causes Headache, Diarrhea And Sleepiness?

My husband is 65 and has been having headaches, episodes of feeling like he is going to pass out, and has been having these episodes for about six months and they are getting worse. He has had issues with diarrhea and had accidents. Once he has an episode of feeling like he is going to pass out, he is very tired and sleeps for a day or so. He seems out of it a lot of the time, and seems to be getting worse.

Hi,

Your husband is having chronic diarrhea and specific tests are needed to find the cause of it from simple stool tests like stools for ova and parasites, stool antigen for giardia, stool microscopy, stool culture, evaluation of fat in the stools to more advanced tests like checks for pancreatic function to colonoscopy and general tests like CBC and ERS, TSH, metabolic profile with liver and kidney function tests, sugar and lipid levels, etc.

After having results of these examinations the doctors will have better understanding of the cause and give him specific treatment. On the other hand diarrhea for so long affects the level of fluids in the body and also electrolytes so he might be more prone to side effects of these and might explain why he feels so faint, have headaches and the sleepiness.

He might feel better taking oral rehydration solutions daily to help substitute the salts and the water he looses with diarrhea.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj,
