What Causes Headache Followed By Excessive Sweating?

I went to see my doctor s PA today for a headache that had lasted 72 hours and for waking up drenched in sweat. The headache showed up Sunday morning. I have an episode of IBS and took two hycosamine and slept 6 hours Sunday afternoon. That evening I still didn t feel well and took two ibuprofen to try to get the headache to go away. Woke up Monday and still had headache but otherwise stomach seemed to be back okay. Took Maxalt and went to work. Headache didn t get better - didn t get worse. (I have migraines - this didn t seem like a migraine but since ibuprofen didn t helped figured I d try it) Monday night took Benadryl to see if it would help. Was worn out by 7pm (took Benadryl about 7:30) and fell asleep before 9pm with the headache. The drenched clothes this morning, headache, lethargy, and just overall yuck feeling led me to doctor. He recommended a Toradol injection and a 1/2 dose of a cortisone shot... that was at about 1:30CST ... He said he figured I d start feeling better within a few hours. 8 hours later, I still have a headache, I was having chills for two hours and now have broken out in sweats. Any suggestions? Oh - and I am not wired ... probably will go to sleep in the next 15-30 minutes if I can get past the headache pain. Pain level - 6

Hi,

Well, The amount of sweat considered normal is quite variable and depends on the demands of the body. Excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis, means that you sweat far more than your body needs you to sweat. For example, if you sweat while sitting calmly at your desk, that is excessive sweating.

In hyperhidrosis, the body's cooling mechanism is so overactive that it produces four or five times the amount of sweat that you need. However, sometimes if sweating happens during the night or there is associated weight loss then it may indicate some more serious issues such as lymphoma or hormonal imbalances.

In every case, if this persists you should see internist first to do some tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
