What Causes Headache Followed By Numbness In Arms When Suffering From Hypertension?
my 44 year boyfriend was hospitalized in November with a bad case of hypertension (due to a lot of emotional stressors) . He has been taking medication that makes him feel weak, exhausted, and with painful legs - to name some of his symptoms or side effects of the medication nisedipine. His doctor prescribed a different drug last week: hydralazine. He felt better right away but then by about the 3rd day he experienced a big headache and then his arms became completely numb. He thought he might be experiencing a stroke. The emergency doctor did not apparently know what was going on with him.
There are different types of anti hypertensive molecules which act differently on kidney, vasculature and other receptors and associated with various ill effects. The hydralazine is known to provoke headache, body cramps and weakness in many of the cases. In my clinic, I do recommend to gradually increase the dose of the new molecule rather than giving complete therapeutic dose since beginning.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
