What Causes Headache When I Wake Up In The Mornings?

I constantly suffer with headaches especially when I wake up in the mornings. I have had a brain scan and have also had monitors fitted overnight to check for other problems. Nothing conclusive has been diagnosed. I very often feel completely drained and lethargic. Hypnic headaches have been suggested but no remedy has been offered. I have always struggled with constipation so to ease the problem have been taking 2 small squares of ex lax chocolate every night for about 10 years or so. I am at my wits end. I have mention the ex lax to my GP and he said he did not think it would present a problem. Do you think the laxatives be the problem? Alternatively can you suggest what the problem may be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,Welcome to the HCM,
There can be many causes of morning headaches E.g
1.Misuse of painkillers
2.tention type headache
3.consumption of alcohol
4.deranged glucose level
5.dehydration
6.idiopathic increased intracranial pressure
I have gone through your history, it seems over anxiety can also be the cause of your symptoms. As you feel lethargic ,you should get checked your blood sugar level and Haemoglobin and avoid exlax chocholate daily as it can trigger headache too, instead you can try having figs, banana, green leafy vegetables and plenty of water daily to get rid of constipation.
As you are getting morning headaches constantly ,you should also rule out idiopathic intracranial hypertention. As it is raised intracranial pressure in the absense of mass lesion or hydrocephlus. It can be associated with increased weight, irregular menstural cycle, pregnancy, postpartum period, any endocrinal problem, iron deficiency anemia .CT brain comes normal usualy, but visual field charting,ESR,FBC,iron studies, antinuclear antibodies and coagulation studies are recommended.
Hopefully my answer is helpfull.
Regards,Dr.Maheshwari

HI
Well come to HCM
Functional headache may be likely, laxative has nothing to do with this, at the most this can be treated with Tab Omeprazole 40 mg once in day and Tab Domperidone 30 mg once in day, keeping in mind that this could be due to hyperacidity, try to keep the stress low everything would be fine soon, have a nice day.
