What Causes Headaches And Nausea When On Blood Pressure Medications?

Been on blood pressure medications for 4 years. Now having headaches, nausea, face flushing, pressure on head that moves around during the day. Could i possibly have developed a sensitivity to one of the following bp meds: lopressor, cozaar, hydroclorothiazide, losartan. I also take 100mg primidone once a day. Thanks.

Hello dear,
Thank you for your question.

In my opinion the symptoms you have been experiencing are indicative of increased blood pressure, that apparently cannot be controlled properly by this regimen. Even though headaches and nausea can be associated with side effects of your drug, face flushing and pressure on the head are typical of high blood pressure.

Primidone side effects include: shakiness, unsteadyness etc.

Lopressor has metoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide as active principles. Side effects may include headache, dizziness, low heart rate, digestive disorders etc.

Cozaar has losartan as its active principles, and sensitivity to this drug is usually manifested with cough, abdominal pain, nausea, muscle and joint pain.

The next step is to make an appointment with your doctor so he/she can evaluate your blood pressure. He/she might eventually increase the dose of you current regimen or might add another drug in order to achieve a better control on you blood pressure.

I hope this helped.
Don't hesitate to contact me, if you have further questions.
All the best,
Dr. Alma
