What Causes Headaches When The Barometric Pressure Drops?

I seem to get headaches when the barometric pressure drops. Relieved by icy/cool cloth to forehead and rest. The most recent time I had cycles of vertigo and nausea. I also seem to be much more susceptible when I am retaining fluids (still have menses tho almost 55). Would a diuretic help?

Hi,

Noted your history of headaches when the barometric pressure drops, relived by icy cool cloth on forehead and rest, cycles of vertigo and nausea, increases on retaining fluid as still have menstrual cycles at the age of 55, wants to know whether diuretic will help and cause of headache.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
Blockage of the opening of the osteo-meatal complex that connects maxillary sinuses to the nose causing pressure within the sinuses causing headache.
Can be vascular also.
Vertigo, nausea with headache can be due to hormonal imbalance that can occur at your age.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Consult your Doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and correlation with the reports.
Tests for hormonal levels and HRT if required.
Counselling is also helpful.
Consult a NEurologist if advised by a Gynecologist for headache to get a proper diagnosis and have proper management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
