77 yr old female. Was sick with upper respiratory infection for 8 weeks. Treated with oral steroids and antibiotics. Lost hearing in one ear followed by treatment of steroids 60 mg tapered for 8 weeks along with viral medication for shingles. Physical therapy treated the vertigo. HX: Labs all fine, no diabetes, high blood pressure controlled w medication parathyroid removed and take lvothyroxin. Hearing did not return. It is 5 months later and still having following issues: Imbalance to the right Eyes dark puffy circles Fatigue Legs swelling at times, taking increased lasix Legs are red and increase red at ankles and splotchy. What is still wrong with me?
It looks like hearing loss that you have is due shingles, a nervous system disease; shingles can cause labyrinthitis resulting in the decreased hearing, deafness, pain, tinnitus and vertigo. Dizziness and imbalance that you feel are because of vertigo (an inner ear problem).
Get examined and treated for delay may cause complications like Ramsay Hunt syndrome (facial weakness and paralysis on the same side of the affected ear). Take all the other medications as prescribed, keep your foot elevated on a stool while you are seated and on a pillow when you are in bed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
