My 87 year-old-dad has lost his hearing. He has been deaf in one ear all his adult life after a childhood chronic infection following scarlet fever. In the last 8 years he has needed a hearing aid to help with hearing in his only hearing ear. Within the last 2 years he has not been able to distinguish musical tones, just hears speech. In the last 6 months he has said that when people talk it sounds like they are talking through a turning fan. In the last 6 weeks his earing has gone down to nothing. He is totally deaf in his only (previously) hearing ear. What is going on?
hello, thanks for your query, normal hearing conducted by tympanic membrane and ossicles and nerve which comes from brain. as a chronic infection he lost tympanic mbrane and ossicles. age onset deafness occurs through nerve cells loss( hair cells connecting to hearing nerve). this is d reason he is getting profound loss due to damage of whole hearing mechanism. hearing aid d choice. all d best. take care.
