Hi,
Risperdal is generally effective in treating the symptoms of
bipolar disorder, bipolar maniac disorder as well as
schizophrenic disorder. In your case, the drug may not be working because:
-- Of course in some cases, the effect of drug may start from the very first week, but in most of the cases, it may take 4-6 weeks to be seemingly effective.
-- The dosage may have to be titrated in respect to its effectiveness against symptoms of disease. In
schizophrenia, the dosage may be started from 2mg/day in single or two equally divided doses. Depending on its effectivity, the dosage may be increased to 4-8 mg/day. The increase in dose should be 1-2 mg/24 hour.
-- Some times, Risperdal alone may not be sufficient and effective, and therefore, some other anti-psychotic drug is also to be added with Risperdal. The dosage of Risperdal may have to be adjusted further in such case.
However, in such cases, all the adjustment of dosage of the drug as well as dosage of other anti-psychotic, if any, is increased or decreased gradually in a tapering manner and this should be done strictly under guidance of your doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
