What Causes Heart Burn And Hiccups Post Intake Of Certain Food?

Hi, I get SEVERE heartburn and hiccups after eating bread or meat. I desperately gulp water to stop the burning, but my throat locks up, and the water can't get to my stomach, so I often throw it up. What is causing this problem, and how can I avoid it? Thanks! Alan

HI DEAR ,

The symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as GERD ( gastrointestinal reflux disease ) . Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens when a muscle at the end of your esophagus does not close properly. This allows stomach contents to leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus and irritate it. I would suggest you to :-

Avoiding alcohol and spicy, fatty or acidic foods (bread or meat) that trigger heartburn.

Eating smaller meals.

Not eating close to bedtime.

Losing weight if needed .

Take light walk after every meal.

Consult gastroenterologist for proper examination . Doctor may order tests like X-ray of your upper digestive system , endoscopy and Ambulatory acid (pH) probe tests .

Doctor may prescribe drugs like ranitidine and omeprazole .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
