It sounds like you might have developed acid reflex disease. Also known as
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is backward flow of stomach acid or contents into the mouth or esophagus that causes symptoms of discomfort often described as heartburn, acid
indigestion, and
metallic taste. About 40% of adults have symptoms of reflux. GERD is usually caused by inappropriate transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxation. Foods that are spicy, acidic, high in fat, caffeines, alcohol, tobacco, and some medications can worse symptoms for reflux. Some people with
severe GERD will have evidence of hiatal hernia. I am not sure if you had any dilation of your esophagus during endoscopy, but that could cause symptoms of reflux. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical symptoms and history. Treatment is usually based on eliminating the foods that I stated above. Also, you can try elevating the head of your bed, avoid meals 2 to 3 hours before bedtime, lose weight, tobacco cessation, and avoid alcohol. I would also try a
reflux medication that you can get over-the-counter such as protonix, nexium, or Pepcid.
