Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Heart Murmur In An Infant And Can It Be Cured?
My daugther in law smoked while she was pregnant. She is 21 years old and it is her first pregnancy. The baby is 3 weeks old and the pediatrician advised them to see a doctor at Unitas because he has a heart murmer (supposedly as a result of a hole). How common is this? Is it curable and could her smoking have anything to do with it? He does not turn blue when he cries of feeds. He weighed 3,8kg at birth and today his weight was 4,4kg.
Hi, thanks for asking. I can understand your concerns. Heart murmurs are usually due to structural heart defects. Congenital heart defects affect 1-2% of the newborns. Most of the congenital heart defects are either spontaneously cured or surgical intervention can be done. It is not necessary that if he does not turn blue then it may not be a heart disease. He may have acynotic heart defect. Yes, research has shown that smoking in pregnant women increases the chances of child born with heart defects. I hope I have helped you. Thank you.
