What Causes Heart Palpitations After Recovering From Chest Infection?

Hi I m a 27 year old female. Since February of this year I have been getting heart palpitations. I had a chest infection in February and that s when I first started noticing them. I was on a night out with my friends and had a lot to drink and that s when I first started to get them that night. I didn t go to the doctor for four weeks for my chest infection as I thought it was just a coughs that would clear up. My doctor gave me antibiotics for my chest infection and it cleared up and the palpitations went away. I forgot to tell my doctor about the palpitations at the appointment. This summer I started to get them again, very faintly and not every day. I went for a heart screening ran by CRY and the ecg came out fine. However last week I was at my friends Engagment party and I had again quite a lot to drink and the next day my heart was going crazy. I felt them really strongly and it was very frightening. They died down the following day but I am still getting them this week, I sometimes feel a heavyness on my chest and a lump in my throat. I have an appointment with my doctor for September 12th but I m wondering should I try and get an appointment sooner as I m not sure if this is dangerous for my health. The only medication I am on is Microgynon and I go to the gym three times a week so I would concider myself quite fit

Hello,

Brief Answer: Common of your heart palpitations causes include hormone changes, stimulants including caffeine, nicotine or alcohol.

Detailed Answer: Heart palpitations happen pretty often, and they’re usually not dangerous.

Hormones can play a role as well as big causes of heart palpitations. That can be from taking new hormonal birth control pills like Microgynon.

Alcohol can have toxic effects on the heart muscle. In general, symptoms of alcoholic on the heart are heart palpitations, Fatigue and weakness, Shortness of breath during sleep, causing frequent waking.

Excessive alcohol abuse is thought to be a major risk factor for health and cardiac complications and side effects.

If you have palpitations that occur frequently or worsen, talk to your doctor.

He or she might suggest heart-monitoring tests to see if your palpitations are caused by a more serious heart problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
