What Causes Heaviness In Legs And Pain Radiating From Hands To Elbow?

My husband is experiencing heaviness in his legs, pain radiating from both hands up to his elbows, and an internal sense of anxiousness (no visible shaking, but that s what it feels like). He recently (within the last month) injured his back and there is some residual pain there. There is some swelling in his right hand as well.

Hello,

As there is a history of trauma to the back, we can attribute heaviness in legs to nerve root pinching caused by back injury. Causes of heaviness of legs are lumbar vertebral spondylitis, lumbar disc prolapse, varicose veins, peripheral arterial diseases, deep venous thrombosis, stroke, restless legs syndrome and swelling of legs due to kidney malfunction or cardiac failure.

Treatment includes rest, pain relief by NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 5 days, tab. Pregabalin for 1 month and tab. Becosules forte for 3 months. Avoid lifting heavy weights and standing for long hours. Try postural modifications.

Pain in hands radiating to the elbow may be due to carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical radiculopathy, nerve impingement by cervical vertebrae, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia.

Treatment is relieving pain and inflammation by NSAIDs or opioids. Corticosteroids can be considered in severe intractable pain. Physiotherapy has a considerable role once the acute phase of pain decreases. MRI of spine is advised as he had injury at back.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
