What Causes Heaviness In The Chest Along With Constant Burps?

Last Saturday (June 4th) I was getting ready for bed and my chest suddenly felt heavy or like I held a note too long while singing. It went away and I didn t feel that way again until sunday evening (I chalked it up to anxiety) because I was dropping my son off for 2 weeks. I ve been burping a whole lot more than normal the last couple of months but the chest pressure located right in the center of my chest came on quite suddenly but only seems to be present in the evenings and at night. My mother has GERD and thinks that s what I have. Occasionally when I burp acid or some food mixed with acid will come up, but I never have heartburn. A couple of times while trying to fall asleep I would jolt awake feeling like my chest was being compressed. Today I ve had the feeling of something being stuck in my chest all day, and when I swallow it feels like I m swallowing phlegm. No pain though, just pressure on my chest bone, right in the center.

Hello,

The symptoms you are experiencing seem to be of GERD. That pain in the center of the chest, pressure like feeling are not uncommon in gastric reflux disease.

Daily I see so many patients with similar complaints. My advice to you would be the following:

1) Food is to be taken in small quantities at a time and at frequent intervals. This helps prevent the action of gastric acid on the stomach.

2) Any proton pump inhibitors like tab.pantoprazole or rabeprazole in combination with domperidone would surely help if taken on empty stomach or at least half an hour before food twice daily for 4 days.

3) Food must mainly consist of fruits and fresh vegetables rather than refined and spicy items.

4)when the symptoms are severe, OMEZ insta sachet can be mixed into a glass of water and taken for immediate relief.

Even after following the above treatment for 1 week, you don’t get any relief or if the symptoms worsen, you can then consult a physician in person who may advise you some investigations before further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
