What Causes Heavy And Prolonged Bleeding After Being Off Pills?

Hello, To make it short - I was on the pill for 3 years, when I came off it nearly 4 years ago, I got my period once then it stopped for almost 2 years. For the last 7 months I ve had continuous bleeding, sometimes heavy & sometimes light. I m waiting on a smear test result which is quite worrying. But wondering if you maybe know what could be wrong? I ve had 2 scans to check for PCOS but they have came back fine. Ive had bloods done too to check for thyroid etc.
