What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding And Lower Abdominal Cramps?

I haven t had a period in close to a year. I m almost 52. I had a small one last month and a very heavy abnormal one that started the day before yesterday. Today I bled so heavy, I got really scared. I bled thru 6 pads in just 2 hours. The bleeding has subsided tonight, but now I have severe lower abdominal cramps/pain about 3 beneath my belly button but above the pubic bone. What might be causing the pain - is it just an abnormally heavy period because I m doing the menopause thing? Wow, I m in some pretty intense pain tonight.

Hi, I think you should go for evaluation by a gynecologist. Get a pelvic examination done to rule out any cervical pathology. Also get a ultrasound done to see the endometrial thickness. If it is more than 4 mm, you may need an endometrial biopsy to rule out endometrial carcinoma. You can take some medicines like Tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding. Hope it helps.
