What Causes Heavy Menstrual Bleeding In A Person With A History Of An Ovarian Cyst?

Hello, my girlfriend is going through a rather odd experience. She previously had an ovarian cyst a couple of years ago now. She just finished her period about 2 weeks ago, and is now heavily bleeding again, constantly for about 4/5 hours, it hurts her to urinate and bad cramps. The bleeding has now stopped, and cramps have subsided. Sexual intercourse hasn t occurred since her last period and she is 18 years of age and is on birth control. Is this something to be concerned of, thanks.

Hello,

Endometriosis can cause heavy menstrual bleeding. Other causes include those related to pregnancy, such as ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage. The pelvic inflammatory disease also can cause heavy menstrual bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Esmeralda Sera, Oncologist
