Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mom and sister have had heavy flows their whole lives. 8 got my period this year, around April, and I'm having the worst time. I bleed through pads that are supposed to last all night (8 hours) in 1-2. My sister says it's normal but it's hard to believe. I've confronted my friends and they say I have some sort of iron deficiency, I really need help!
As a physician, I would like to tell you that what you are experiencing is a normal phenomenon as your menstruation just started and it will take time to regularize your menstruation, about one year or so. Meanwhile you should check your Hemoglobin levels after every 3 months and get treatment if necessary.
Also, if you continue to have heavy periods after 2 to 3 years from starting, then you should visit a consulting MD Ob/gy doctor to get evaluated and examined.
Hope this will help you. Feel free to ask any further question. Have a nice day.
Regards, Dr. Abhijeet
