What Causes Heavy Menstrual Cycles?

Hello,
I am 25 years old...will be 26 in March and I have been suffering from prolonged heavy bleeding from my very first period and recently I was referred to a specialist who did a surgery in December and removed a fibroid from my uterus. Since the surgery, I have not been experiencing any pain, but my bleeding is still really heavy , to the point where I have to be changing every 30 minutes sometimes and am not able to work out. He prescribed prometrium and a estrogen pill to try and bring my hormone levels to where they needed to be....but I am still bleeding non stop ....I might have had 2 weeks of no period since my surgery in December. At this point I am just very frustrated and need to know what's wrong. Do you have any suggestions?
