What Causes Hematoma Following Head Injury?

Hello. I had a head injury which more or less cut the top of my head just back from my forehead. That healed however I now have a large bump across my forehead which an urgent care doctor described as a hematoma. It has been almost 5 weeks since the initial injury and seems to be getting worse now spreading up to the top of my forehead where the initial cut was. The bump feels soft in the middle as if there is liquid (assume blood) inside. When I touch it I can feel the liquid move but now I m worried about it spreading. Does this sound like a hematoma and should I be concerned at the length of time I have had it? Thank you in advance for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have developed a hematoma after head injury and now are experiencing discomfort due to the feeling of the hematoma spreading. You are suggested to get clinically examined without delay. Hematoma forms after an injury due to the seeping of blood from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. Get a CT or MRI done at the earliest. In the meantime you can give a cold/ice compress for relieve.

Treatment will depend on the type of the hematoma (subdural, epidural, etc) detected and the severity of the symptoms. If needed the treating doctor may refer you to a neurologist before any surgical interventions like drainage. You may need medicines or surgical treatment. Yes, you should be concerned & get it treated before the symptoms gets worse.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
