What Causes Herpes?

I have been told i have herpes on my private parts. I had no idea what is was as thought was urinary infection so went to my gp. worried about loads of issues one being having this on my medical records. Been in same relationship for over three years. Assures me he's not been with anyone else, nor have I. Looks like he may have something around his nails though.? Very sore and distressed about whole thing. Im 50 years old and now suddenly this awful things has happened. Orig question~ can i request this information removed or kept private?

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a herpes simplex virus (HSV). It can cause sores on your genital or rectal area, buttocks, and thighs. You can get it from having sex, even oral sex. The virus can spread even when sores are not present. It is highly infective and symptoms can be reduced bu taking antiviral medications.
