What Causes Hiccups After Receiving Steroid Shots In The Knees?
My hubby had steroid shots in both knees yesterday at 2p.m.....today about 6 p.m he began hiccupping ....it is now 8p.m. and he s still hiccupping......he never has had hiccups before.....also I notice his face is quite flushed....he says he otherwise feels fine.....I gave him an antihistamine about 30 minutes ago.....still hiccupping and flushed. Actually, Dexamethasone is a well-known cause for hiccups and is often used for joint injections. I'm still surprised it would have this effect on him because usually with joint injections, not very much of the medication gets into the system, it mostly stays in the joint. However, it seems likely that the small amount of Dexamethasone in his system is causing these hiccups.
I would expect that the hiccups do not last long, as the medication is cleared from his system. However, if they last more than 48 hours, I would recommend he be evaluated by his doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
