What Causes Hiccups After Taking Dexamethasone?

My husband is on day 3 of taking Dexamethasone 2mg. tabs, age 65, and the 2nd dose for today is supposed to be at 8:30pm. He has been taking 2 tabs at breakfast and 2 tabs at dinner for the last 2 days. He started experiencing hiccups yesterday, and we re taking care of that. But in the last half hour he is having chest pains. It may have elevated his BP, and he s taken more magnesium supplements, and potassium supplements...We do have a BP machine that we can take his BP with...

Hi,

Steroids can cause gastritis and stomach irritation that may cause hiccups.

Besides this potassium can also cause gastric irritation. However, the chest pain needs evaluation.

Steroids can also raise BP, so you should chek his BP , but even if the BP is normal chest pain needs assessment.

Though many times chest pain is not caused by any serious disease and maybe the result of gastritis caused by the steroid.

Still, we advise going to the ER for the chest pain to rule out any serious disease especially if old age, or diabetic, hypertensive patient.
