What Causes High TSH Levels And Is Medication Required?

My TSH levels were high, 4.81 but my T4 Free level was normal at 1.32.
I am awaiting results on an antibody test.
I have no symptoms of hypothyroid disease yet. I am 6'1" and 170 lbs. I have cholesterol of 201, with LDL at 113 and HDL at 78. Triglyceride level is 48, and all other blood levels are in normal range. I am not depressed and have plenty of energy, and am not cold or have dry skin.
What might account for the high TSH levels? And if the antibody test is positive, should I consider medication, or wait until I experience symptoms?

Hi,

Your TSH is just high normal. Cholesterols are normal. If your antibodies are negative you need not start on medications unless you have a goiter or you are a female planning for pregnancy. If antibodies are normal increase the iodine content of food and recheck thyroid function tests after 3 months.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help

With warm regards,

Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM)
