What Causes High Blood Pressure While On Valsartan?
I had a small heart attack a week ago. I had a stent put in a cardiac arterey & was sent home on a bunch of new meds. I also have hypertension & used to take 80mg of Valsartan (diovan). I was switched to 5mg of Ramipril. I check my BP & tonight it was a little high (161/81). Would it be ok to also take a 40 md Valsaetan tonight to help lower my BP?
Hello sir. It is not recommended to take valsartan or any other angiotensin receptor blockers while you are on ramipril or any other angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. The combination of these two drugs can cause serious electrolyte imbalances in your body and is not recommended. A blood pressure of 161/81 is not to be worried about as the diastolic(81) is still under normal limits. I would recommend additional measurements of blood pressure along with lifestyle modifications like increased physical activity, strict diet and restriction of salt in diet. If the systolic blood pressure is still high (>140) even after these changes, then other drugs can be added to the current regimen. But valsartan is a strict no. Hope this helps. Thanks.
