What Causes High Blood Sugar Levels Despite Taking Lantus And Novolog?
My nephew is in his 50 s and has had some med problems. Now, his blood sugar levels are way , way too high. an ER doctor put him on novolog and lantus and he is taking up to 80 units of novolog and large doses of lantus and his blood sugars are still way too high ( 350 to 500 ). he has taken a total of 240 units of insulin today. his sugar checked at 333 at 6:00 pm so he took 30 units of novolog and 80 units of lantus and at 9:00 pm it was 453.
Thanks for asking at Healthcare Magic. I read your question and I understand your concern. Taking more than 200 Units insulin per day without full control of blood sugar level implies Hepatic insulin resistance due to; 1.Lack of dietary control 2. Lack of proper injection technique, outdated insulin. 3. injection at hypertrophied site. 4. hidden infection All that you have to do is to start proper diabetes diet as per American diabetes protocoal. Aerobic excesize 30 minutes a day five days a week at 100 steps/minute. check his technique and site of injection. check insulin shelf life do full blood count to check for hidden infection. Check your insulin resistance level by HOMA-IR calculator before starting dietary therapy and excersize and after that for monitoring resistance level. Hope it helps best.
