What Causes High Cholesterol And Low White Blood Cell Count?

My son (29 years old) who was just informed that his cholesterol is high (LDL btw 130 and 170 w/in 6 months; no pattern, up and down and up; HDL btw 60 & 86, also no pattern), as well as low white blood cell count (2, consistently over same timeframe). He s advised to take Lipitor @20 mg and being referred to see a hematologist. We ve scheduled an appointment, but I want to know if the two things have any correlation or they are two independent issues. He exercises regularly and eats right. We do have a family history of high cholesterol but use exercises to increase the HDL and control the ratios.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what your son had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, the levels you shared here are not that high to be causing such problems, are to be worried about much however with this age these are significant and lifestyle modification can be helpful.

Genetic causes of dyslipidemia usually present with very high levels of cholesterol.

Meanwhile, blood counts may be monitored. Dose of statin may be reduced. Bone marrow examination may not be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
