What Causes High Elevation In Sugar Levels After Taking Methylprednisolone?
I am a diabetic and I recently started to take methylprednisolone 4mg dose pack for a very bad case of sciatica and I noticed that my blood sugar went up to 234 after I ate lunch this evening. I also take metformin 500 bid. Am I at rick for going into a diabetic coma?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern. Elevation of blood sugar values after taking methylprednisolone is due to breakdown of glycogen by methylprednisolone. Actually steroids like methylprednisolone has tendency to increase blood sugar due to its action which is opposite to insulin. There is not much problem in that. At blood sugar level 234 there is not much risk of diabetic coma. But you need to reduce your blood glucose levels. Consult your doctor, he would increase dose of metformin or reduce the dose of methylprednisolone & your blood sugar level would start decreasing. Low consumption of sugars & exercise is also recommended.
Refer to your physician Hope this information helps
