What Causes High Fever And Headache Despite Taking Tylenol?

Hi, I do a lot of hiking, (3 to 4 days a week). I use , OFF, DEEP WOODS repellant. I live in NH. I was planning a hike Sunday night, and all of a sudden, I started to feel achy and very warm. I took my temperature and it was 100.7. I figured it might just be the Flu. So I stayed home, have been taking Tylenol, drinking plenty of water and resting. My joints are very achy, I have a blasting headache, plus my eyes are in a lot of pain. It s 4 days now and my fever is up to 102.2. I called my doctor this morning, but nobody has gotten back to me. I now think I might have Lyme. I always check myself after hiking and all has been good for my 16 years of doing this. I m 60 years old and I m in very good shape.....but I have never felt this sick before. If my doctor doesn t get back to me tonight, should I go to the ER. Plus, are these Lyme symptom? Thank you, Joseph

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are many causes of fever, not only does Lyme have these symptoms, but a stationary viral infection can cause it. In this case, the fever can be high, there may be joint pain, headache and they should not last more than 3 to 5 days.

Anyway, you should consult the doctor if more than that time passes, or if you have other symptoms such as diarrhea vomiting, profuse sweating, if there are skin lesions.

In Lyme disease you should look for the sting that produces a characteristic lesion called “bull eye” and produces chronic febrile states with joint pain, visit your doctor to do a physical examination and rule out other acute causes, hydrate and be aware of other manifestations, get better soon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
