What Causes High Heart Rate While Working?

Hi, I will have a resting heart rate in the low 70 s, then when I start moving slowly around the house, it goes up to 105 to 110. If I move much faster if will go up into 117 range. When I sit down, it drops back down to resting heart rate. I have been experiencing some shortness of breath and feel little winded. I m a male weigh 150 lbs, 40 years old. My blood pressure when taken in a relaxed state is 117/77. I m not taking any medications. I ve notice I have been experiencing some acid reflux at night time while sleeping and some muscle cramps in my feet.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your heart rate sounds like it is an appropriate response to activity and I would expect it to be about that fast depending on your activity. As long as you are not having any chest pain, lightheadedness, or passing out, I don't think there's anything to be concerned about.

This can also be affected by your fitness level, which your shortness of breath may be related to as well. Acid reflux can be exacerbated by the foods that you eat, including spicy foods, caffeine, citrus fruit, and chocolate. Avoiding any of these may help.

You can also try elevating the head of your bed to help prevent the reflex of acid in your stomach. Avoiding meals too late at night can also help. Muscle cramps can have many causes, including dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities, so I would recommend staying well hydrated and if it persists, getting your blood check to make sure your electrolytes are normal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch,
