Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Hives And Upper Abdominal Pain While On Hydroxychloroquine?
I have recently (June 2015) been diagnosed with Myopathic dermatomyositis. In July I was prescribed Hydroxychloroquine. I have not seen any improvement and 4 days ago, I developed occasional sharp pain in the upper abdomen and through to the upper back. They come and go. At about the same time I developed hives that almost cover my body. Antihistamines have worked for a few hours but I am having to take them much too frequently. My whole body seems to be off kilter. I have stopped the medication until I can talk to my doctor. I am miserable.
After having gone through your history it seems to me you have developed an allergic reaction to Hydroxychloroquine apparently prescribed to treat myopathic dermatomyositis.
I would suggest you to continue to take oral antihistamines or a topical steroid till you consult your treating rheumatologist. You may need oral steroids like Prednisone or Immunosuppressive (steroid-sparing) agents for the treatment of myopathic dermatomyositis.
Meanwhile avoid sun exposure and use sunscreens & photoprotective clothing.
Hope the suggestion given above could be useful in getting the treatment.
