What Causes Hives In A Child After Taking Zyrtec?

Hello, I have 3 yr old boy that started a dry cough on July 10th. I had to start him on QVAR and Albuterol because he previously had an asthma attack back in March of this year (first and only attack). Cough and cold are considered triggers. After coughing 4 weeks, his Pediatrician said could be sinus infection dripping behind his nose. He was given amox for 10 days. After 5 days of Amoxicillin he traveled to a different country to my parents. It appeard that the cough was slowly getting better until we got to the airport and he started coughing every few minutes (I guess it was the air conditioning). In the last day of Amox he start again coughing like 30 times per hour. My son was seen the next day by a dr. in the hospital overseas. He was given Montelukast and Aerius. He took the first dose of Montelukast before bedtime and in the morning he had 2 hives on his back. We thought are insect bites. He took the 2nd and 3rd dose and then even more hives (around 10). We called the dr and we stopped Montelukast. At this time he was coughing once or twice per day. We continued with Aerius. Things looked like getting better. After 4 days he got a few more hives. Then we scheduled him to see another dr. The second dr. said it s an allergy but could be from anything and he prescribed Zyrtec for 7 days. Today is the 5th day with Zyrtec and he gets one hive per day first thing in the morning or after nap time. It looks like the hives appear during sleep. He is scheduled to see an Allergy Specialist here in the US on Aug9th, so 7 days from now. He returns in the States on Aug8th. He should finish the last Zyrtec dose on Aug 4th. My 2 questions are: 1)what I should do if the next day he stops Zyrtec (Aug 5th) he gets gives? I want him to be able to travel here safe. Should I keep doing the Zyrtec and compromise his visit with the Allergist? 2)what do you think may have caused the hives? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the cause of rash and itching after consuming Zyrtec indicates residual effects of underlying allergy reaction effects to previous montelukast drug.

* In my clinic, I do recommend to continue cetrizine with addition of systemic glucocorticoids or others as per the need of the case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
